Podcasting: The New PR

By Nick May
Owner at Walls By Design and Podcast Host at The Chaise Lounge

In the digital age we are now living in, PR no longer solely consists of mentions on the radio or television, a spot in a newspaper or magazine, press releases or events. We can now swiftly use social media, and what is becoming considerably more popular, podcasting.

Nick May and Sheryl Janis sat down together on the Chaise Lounge Podcast to discuss podcasting and its relationship to marketing. If you are unfamiliar, podcasting is much like a radio show made on demand and available through streaming apps. The topics are limitless and can range from being a source of news, investigative reports, entertainment, and even talks on niched subjects including the business of interior design. Podcasting is now a main form of media with about 73 million monthly podcast listeners in The US alone, according to The Infinite Dial.

Podcasting is added to RSS feeds and can be sent straight to your listeners, once posted. It truly is a magnificent way to connect with your preexisting audience in a personal way, and even gives the opportunity to reach a grander audience. Podcasting gives life to you and your firm through voice and music, not just the written word. Listeners almost feel like they’re sitting in on an intimate conversation, something to gravitate towards.

Sheryl Janis, an interior designer and podcaster, was a guest on a recent episode of The Chaise Lounge, hosted by Nick May. During the episode, which can be streamed on all podcast listening apps or on thechaiseloungepodcast.com, the two go in depth about podcasting being a new means of marketing. As they discuss in the episode, most times podcasts are recorded conversations between a few people – no pressure. Even introverts like Nick and Cheryl can connect with many and gain abundant success through the medium. The two podcasters discuss the trivialities of podcasting, but more so, how much they have both come to love it.

Cheryl began The Wellness Design Podcast with a friend and is still producing new episodes. Though a fun and successful endeavor, Cheryl now mainly focuses on her podcast for Porcelanosa, Healthcare Interior Design 2.0. She interviews creatives in the field of healthcare and interior design to discuss innovations and technologies.

Nick began his venture into the world of podcasting as a means of marketing his painting company, Walls by Design. Since, he has formed a media company, iMay Media, producing podcasts on various topics, all within the interior design realm.

Even if you have some qualms with the idea of podcasting, give it a try. When you intertwine your brand with this new form of media, you and your clients will connect on a different level. Hosting a podcast, more than a form of communication, will make your business more dynamic and offer diverse content for potential clients.

Nick May is the host of a widely acclaimed interior design podcast, The Chaise Lounge, dedicated to the business of interior design. Each week he interviews top designers from across the globe to find out how they got into interior design, why they started their firm, and what has made them so successful.
