Do you find that you are exhausted at the end of the day and yet you can’t point to any significant accomplishments? Do you end each day without completing things on your “to do” list and instead push those tasks to the following day?

Well, you may not be surprised to find out that there is no “magic pill,” to running a great business, but there are skills you can develop to make running your business more easily.

First, ask yourself if you are committed to making changes in how you do business – and be honest with yourself! If the result of streamlining and simplifying your business day is worth learning new skills, then set that goal and develop a plan to achieve it. Setting goals, and then establishing a plan to reach those goals helps you achieve results.

Next, identify the areas in your business where you need help to make your business easier. Understand that making necessary changes likely involves training and developing a new set of skills. Don’t think you have to know everything. After all, most designers enter the business world with little to no business training. Training establishes a foundation for small business owners to learn new skills and can provide the tools to better understand what is involved in running a more efficient and effective business – hence making running your business easier.

Training may involve the internal processes needed to run your business as well as more effectively managing and educating your team and your clients.

Developing the processes and procedures that will make your business run more easily has a positive effect not just for you but on your entire team. Often the problem is admitting that there is great value in ongoing business training. Whereas many designers regularly attend training about new design ideas or products, and yet they ignore or postpone training that focuses on more effectively running your business.

It’s also critical that your training be focused around serving your clients and understanding their motivation, as they are the heart of your business. As much as clients will appreciate your design and product knowledge, they find even greater value if you and your team also offer a professional design process.

Consider creating a process for interviewing prospects so you can easily filter out those who are not your ideal clients. Wouldn’t that make life easier?

Don’t forget to include your team in the training. Training can provide employees with a group of tools to be effective communicators and help grow your business. After all, your employees are often the first touch point for the customer.

The fundamentals of running a business allows small business owners to set goals, educate their employees and better serve their clients.
